Improving Treatment Effectiveness:  Guide Therapy with Attachment Theory and Compassionate Self-Awareness

Presented by:

 Leslie Becker-Phelps, Ph.D.

Dr. Becker-Phelps has a private practice in Basking Ridge and is on the medical staff at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, Somerset.  She is dedicated to helping the people in the community become emotionally and psychologically health.  To this end, she has written books, blogs for WebMD and Psychology Today, and presents brief instructional videos on her YouTube channel.

Insecure attachment styles can make people vulnerable to, and exacerbate, psychopathology.  In contrast, those with a secure attachment style have a greater sense of well-being, navigate relationships in a healthier way, and are more resilient to difficulties that arise.  This presentation will briefly review attachment theory.  Then it will address how to nurture in patients a more secure attachment style by guiding them to develop greater compassionate self-awareness   This approach provides an approach to treatment that can integrate well with various therapeutic approaches.

Learning Objectives  Participants will be able to:

1.         Describe how insecure attachment relates to psychopathology, undermining healthy                            relationships with self and others.
2.         Explain how developing secure attachment can improve treatment effectiveness.
3.         Demonstrate techniques to increase five fundamental domains of self-awareness.
4.         Provide individualized treatment to help insecure patients develop more secure attachment              and improved treatment outcomes.

This program is intended for psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, nurses, mental health counselors, marriage and family therapists, and graduate students. It will be presented at an intermediate level, meant for those with some prior knowledge of the subject matter.
