Evaluation and Treatment of “Failure to Launch” Individuals

Presented by:

 Nathan McClelland, Ph.D.

Emerging adulthood has in recent years been characterized as a developmental life stage separate and distinct from both late adolescence and young adulthood. Typically viewed as occurring between the ages of 18 and 25, emerging adulthood centers on successful separation and individuation from parental figures and increased independence in various life domains. The presentation will focus on the evaluation and treatment of “failure to launch” individuals, e.g., those emerging adults who struggle to achieve the goals of the emerging adult phase.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Summarize the current research on emerging adulthood as a distinct life phase.
  • Discuss evaluation and treatment concepts for emerging adults and failure to launch individuals.
  • Apply concepts discussed to applicable patients.
